ETIAS Guide 2025: Everything You Need to Know

Last updated: February 2025

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new travel authorization requirement for visa-exempt travelers visiting Europe's Schengen Area. Similar to the US ESTA or Canadian eTA, ETIAS is an electronic system that pre-screens travelers before they arrive in Europe.

ETIAS is not a visa. It's a visa waiver program that allows citizens from eligible countries (including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and others) to continue visiting the Schengen Area without a visa, while adding an additional security layer.

When Does ETIAS Start?

ETIAS is expected to launch in 2025. The European Commission will announce the exact start date. Once implemented, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to obtain ETIAS authorization before boarding flights or crossing borders into the Schengen Area.

Important: There will be a transition period after launch. Check official EU sources for the most current information on ETIAS implementation dates.

ETIAS and the 90/180 Day Rule

ETIAS authorization does not change the 90/180 day rule. Even with ETIAS, non-EU travelers can only stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period.
